By day you build your city. By night you defend it from the wall against a horde rolling out of the fog.
The fog is the enemy. Light reveals targets and helps you aim. Turn searchlights, throw flares and set fires. The artillery can fire blind, but shots into fog scatter farther.
The horde is a living mass. Hundreds of zombies pile up against the wall. Once the pile reaches the top, they climb over. Break it with grenades, molotovs or a burning oil ditch.
Noise draws them in. Every shot calls the horde to that stretch of wall. A silent crossbow, a suppressor and a decoy are tactical tools.

Your people are characters. They have names, traits, injuries and experience. Death is permanent.
The city and the wall are one system. The ammo workshop, armory, generator, hospital and the rest change what you see with your own eyes at night.
